Title: Bedtime Date: 11/2005 Size: 18" x 24" Material: Drawing Paper Medium: Vine and Compressed Charcoal, Color Pencil
This was an assignment for my Intermediate Drawing course. We were instructed to think about our childhood and to draw a strong image from our memory from that period in our life. When I was a kid I had wild fantasies and nightmares, as I'm sure any other child at that age does, about monsters living under my bed and waiting in my closet. I thought once I fell asleep that they would come out to kill me in grizzly ways and devour my organs. This image is a slightly abstract construction around that memory.
First we did it in monochromatic black and white charcoal on a piece of 18" x 24" sketch paper, and then to do it again on a better piece of drawing paper in colored pencil only, but I also used charcoal again. This would be that second version, the only difference from the first version besides being in color was I flipped the image horizontally, did a better job on the hands and replaced the pipe on the floor with a knife.
I still wanted to keep it mainly black and white to retain that old-fashioned horror sense, with only splashes of color hues in certain areas to attract attention, much like the way it was done in the movie "Sin CIty".
